The 2017 Spangenberg Law Firm Video PSA College Scholarship Contest invited students who will be in college this fall and who share the firm’s passion about important societal issues to create an original Public Service Announcement video on one of four important topics:

  • What can college students do to raise awareness about campus safety issues?

  • How can we help to raise awareness about Traumatic Brain Injuries and prevention?
  • How can young people raise awareness and help prevent human trafficking?

The First Prize winner – chosen by the law firm’s selection committee on the basis of originality, creativity, strength of message and ability to inspire viewers – is Ohio high school senior, Cade Santha. Mr. Santha, who created an impactful video PSA on the subject of campus safety, was chosen from among the more than 50 entries submitted by students from 22 states. Mr. Santha, is a graduating senior at Boardman High School in Boardman, Ohio, and will be a freshman this fall at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. As the First Prize winner, Mr. Santha is the recipient of a $2,000 college scholarship.

Additionally, twenty finalists’ video PSAs were posted online for a public voting selection process to determine the Second and Third Prize winners, during which nearly 2,800 votes were cast.

The Second Prize winner, chosen by the public, is Suzanna Thallman, a current student at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Bowling Green, Ohio. Ms. Thallman’s creative video PSA advocated for campus safety, offering a glimpse into the several ways BGSU promotes smart decision-making and safety on its campus. Ms. Thallman is the recipient of a $1,000 college scholarship.

The Third Prize winner is Max McIlquham, a graduating senior at Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton, Massachusetts. Mr. Mcllquham used his personal experience with a concussion to explain what should be done after receiving a traumatic brain injury. This fall, Mr. Mcllquham will be attending Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, and is the recipient of a $500 college scholarship.
