MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 22, 2017 — Zoox co-founders Tim Kentley-Klay and Dr. Jesse Levinson announced today that former Moog, Inc. Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Gonzalo Rey, has joined the company as Vice President of System Design and Functional Safety. At Zoox, Rey will oversee and develop specifications and validation protocols for the hardware and software systems that will enable a fully autonomous vehicle.
Rey joins Zoox after nearly 25 years in the aerospace industry. At Moog, he led a 1,200 person global engineering organization developing flight control systems for the F-35, Boeing 787, 747-8, the Airbus A350, and several business aircraft during his tenure as Director of Engineering for the Aircraft Group. As CTO he also oversaw research and development groups for robotics and autonomous systems.
“Gonzalo exemplifies precisely the caliber of leader we value at Zoox—creative, technical and fearless,” said Kentley-Klay, Zoox CEO. “Having risen to the top of Moog as CTO, Gonzalo has led large scale engineering programs with exacting functional safety requirements. Gonzalo is eminently qualified to join Zoox where he will oversee the specification and functional safety testing of our advanced mobility ecosystem. We are thrilled to have someone of his caliber and experience join our adventure to create autonomous mobility.”
“I’ve been itching for a journey like the one Zoox is on,” said Rey. “It has all the right ingredients—a best-in-class team, a grand vision, and is working to ensure that mobility is safe and clean for people in cities. I am excited to be a pioneer for the 21st-century urban landscape. Zoox will set the bar for functional safety in this rapidly evolving field.”
Rey began his career as a Staff Engineer at the Moog Aircraft Group Technology Center in 1991. In 2008, he became Director of Engineering and Technology for the Aircraft Group with development centers in the US, UK, and India. Rey received his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Tecnologico Buenos Aires, a Masters in Electrical Engineering, a Masters in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.
