HONOLULU, June 14, 2017 — Since 2005, Hawaii Self Storage has awarded over $500,000 in academic scholarships to 134 Oahu high school students. On Tuesday, June 13th, ten local high school seniors were given college scholarships to help with the costs of their higher education. The event was held at the Pearl City storage location.
“We are proud to commit ourselves to supporting local youth through our Reach Hawaii programs,” said Mike Wood, Managing Partner of Hawaii Self Storage. “Our customers can feel good knowing that it is because of them that we can give back, and together build a strong foundation for Hawaii’s future leaders.”
Hawaii Self Storage received 259 applications from thirteen area high schools this year. Each student submitted a comprehensive essay about themselves, their goals, and how they can positively impact their community after graduating from college. A selected panel judged the essays on the quality of writing, presentation, content, and overall effort.
Each winning student receives a scholarship totaling $4,000 to help them attain their college degree. Many of these students struggled with tuition costs and some did not believe that a college education was in their future.
To qualify, applicants must enroll as a full-time student taking a minimum of 12 credits, submit a letter of acceptance into a recognized academic degree program, and maintain a 3.0 GPA for each year enrolled.
The 2017 scholarship winners are:
Kiara Alonzo (Farrington High School)
Gum Aung (Kaimuki High School)
Kacie Kajihara (Kalani High School)
Samantha Lumbao (Leilehua High School)
Andrea Lyn Mateo (Waipahu High School)
Brandon Ragasa (Campbell High School)
Noah Tramuto (Pearl City High School)
Mailani Wendt (Kapolei High School)
Leo Wu (McKinley High School)
